Artist opportunity - commission to engage and creatively capture young people’s lived experience of gender-based abuse

March, 2022

Newcastle Arts Team are looking to commission an artist to engage and creatively capture young people’s lived experience of gender-based abuse and in particularly to hear from diverse voices across all expressions of gender.

Violence against women and girls is a serious and prevalent issue but it is possible to describe gender-based violence in recognisable international terms. By this, we mean any act of abuse that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or psychological harm or suffering to women. We acknowledge that people of all genders or none can experience and perpetrate abuse. However, male violence against women and girls is overwhelmingly the most prevalent. It is relevant to all our lives whether we know about it or not and it is perpetrated within all communities and social groups so may well be experienced by people you will be working with.

The appointed artist will work with identified, supported and interested young people in partnership with Project 4 Change Youth organisation. Projects4Change |

Finished artwork will be shared across a wide range of formal and informal settings in Newcastle, such as schools, youth clubs and social media. There is no pre-conception as to what young people will want to explore and create, but care should be taken throughout as this is a very sensitive issue. Finished work might include videos, posters, or a short campaign but this is not an exhaustive list.

The commission will run May - August 2022.

Applications close 7th April 2022.

Commission fee: £10-15k (pro-rata)
